By the way, what is "Debian Association, Inc."?

Since I'm trying to compile information about the organizational 
structure of the Debian project I recalled that my /etc/issue file reads:

Debian GNU/Linux 0.93
Copyright (C) 1994, 1995 Debian Association, Inc. and others

So, the obvious question is "what is Debian Association, Inc.?"
Is it a real association? Who are its members? What is its charter?
Is it nonprofit or for profit?
Or maybe there is no association after all, who knows?

Who knows? Can someone tell me about it?
I want to compile all this info about how Debian is organized and submit 
it for inclusion with the rest of the documentation. I think it is 
important that this matter be clarified.
