You are right :(

I also read a bit about the upstream author: he abandoned the project
(https://github.com/OpenDiablo2/OpenDiablo2) and is now trying to rewrite it in
other programming languages. Users also complain that he suddenly shut down the
Discord server for no reason. His behavior seems unpredictable.

So yes, unfortunately, there is no good, working engine for Diablo 2.

I tested it on a Debian Sid, sadly I was not able to do a lot.

The intro videos play, then I reach a screen showing the backround of the
menu, including the animated title and background music. But it does not
render any button, preventing any further action.

If it is not a bug but the current status of this engine, I’d say it
would not bring a lot to Debian for now.
