I’m really close to getting it to work through WINE, thanks to ./play.it. Of
course, a native open-source engine would be much better.
(I already have locally built .deb packages that are fully working but they
rely on a first installation using WINE, something I could not easily automate)
My only remaining blocker is the ability to extract/include the CD key from/into
the game MPQ archives. I have been able do that for StarCraft and Warcraft 3
(already supported by ./play.it), but without remembering the exact details I
know that I encountered a blocker when trying to replicate that with Diablo 2.

Yes, I think it’s worth getting in touch with them. Seeing people interested in
including their work into Debian could spark a new wave of motivation.
