think I should now jump in and add my grain of salt, as I am also
developing games on Godot.

Long story made short -> try to just package a .pck and rely on the
packaged godot binary. It will be easier to find a sponsor this way I think.
Just to be clear, you still need to package the source code for a Debian package. From what I understand, a .pck is a binary format. But this seems like a reasonable alternative for the build in d/rules. Unless someone who has more experience with Godot sees a problem with it...
