We have to try to get a balance between upstream will and users needs.
In fact the Social Contract tells us to think about Free Software and
Users, not about Upstreams, so in case of severe conflict between
them, I'd go for the User. In any case I don't expect much problems
from most of upstreams, especially if we do it in a cross-distro way.
If Upstream decides against it, and their point made sense, that game
could be an exception to the system. If they decide arbitrarily
against it, and we think it's better for Debian to have that fixed,
I'd go for that whatever Upstream might say. I think we could get the
decision in a per-case basis. The first step would be to discuss the
goals and decide on a design. Upstreams might want to have a say in
that design too, anyway.
