Re: gothicx-guest commit problems
Hi!
Rhonda, thanks for pointing this out :) This has uncovered two things
that the team is lacking right now, and I guess sooner or later it was
going to happen, so we'll have to cope with it, and hopefully find a
solution.
In first place, I agree with Eddy in the fact that we might need to
add those Access Control Lists. I guess we all see the benefits for
it, so I won't extend on this point.
In second place, we might need to develop a way for new developers to
smoothly fit in, especially those with might not be that familiar with
the tools the group uses and with Debian way of doing things. One of
the features we wanted to get with the team was to open a way for new
developers to get more involved in Debian, so we might want to develop
a path for those joining us.
I wouldn't like to focus this discussion personally on gothicx-guest,
we all make mistakes and we all have and had to learn. As I said, it
was pretty clear (at least looking back) that this was prone to
happen, so lets find a way to solve the real causes. One of the things
I would personally won't like is to scare new developers. Only those
who don't do anything don't make mistakes. Then again, mistakes are
for learning from them and not repeating them. I would like to
concentrate more on how to avoid those mistakes in the future for
everybody than to blame anyone.
For the first point, I'm not that familiar with SVN servers to be able
to implement ACLs myself, probably Eddy is more proficient in that and
could take care of it.
The second one, I can try to take care of that myself, even though
that might mean to be a bit less active in real packaging for a while,
but it might be worth it. It will make sense to develop a learning
path for joining the team and, on the long run, we can all benefit
from it, both in terms of more maintainers helping, better quality of
the packages and better coordination in the group. Do you think it
might be a good idea to concentrate a bit in this? Anyone else wants
to help? This might imply developing more documentation on current
practices, our internal policy and the way of doing things inside the
Games Team.
Greetings,
Miry
