You failed to announce it here, where the package should be discussed.

Giving people a vote is always doable.

As I see it, it's not a matter of vote vs. unilateral-decision, it's about lack of time.

BTW, how many of you are actually coming to DebConf this year? It would be really nice to meet you all and have a BoF discussion about the Debian Desktop Project.
