The normal viewpoint is that debian stable is too old for desktop use. I would
recommend that if you want a debian desktop then you use testing or unstable.
I think that testing is up to date right now with KDE 3.1 rather than the 2.2
version in debian 3.0 and more recent versions of most software.

Or you coulds run unstable. I have been using unstable for a year now and I
have had no major problems with it. personly I think the name is more of a
disclaimer rather than a massive problem. I would not let my mum use it but
if you know about unix sysmin or you know people to ask about it then you
might as well.

I read the debian-kde mailing list and the people who try out the kde
backports always seem to get into problems. This could be because 1) no one
post sucesses or 2) kde is a lot of packages and murphys law is sure to take
a hold at some point. My advice is to go the whole hog and use testing.

http://wiki.debian.net/?DebianKDE

is where you can find the backport instrutions

I don't think knoppix is part of debian and I think that knoppix problems
should probley be sent somewhere where the people behind it can hear.

I dont think that a fork needs to happen between the server and desktop sides
of debian. More could be done for the desktop overall, but debian does the
best it can with the software it has got. I think the linux desktop problems
need to be solved higher upstream.
