I see, that sounds similar to the cloud stuff that recently entered Debian:

Sounds like something we need for OEM images for Debian. I expect a
Debian version would need to be based on debconf, does your version
use that?

I wonder if it would be a good idea to do two installs, create two
master images and compare them to see what things are created on a
per-machine basis during install? It would be interesting to hear
about the differences.
