I'm not sure who's at fault here. But it seems it's lilo or lilo-installer as you suggested, as a new install under VirtualBox didn't demonstrated this problem and LILO was installed fine. However, the installed system failed to boot. LILO started booting the kernel and, just after the message "Booting the kernel", lots of "BUG: unable to handle the kernel" messages where displayed. Attached you can see the gziped syslog from the install under VirtualBox, after using "set -x" at the top of lilo-installer's postinst (file named syslog.virtualbox.gz) and the screenshot from LILO booting the installed system under VirtualBox and displaying the "BUG: unable to handle the kernel" messages (file named virtualbox-xfs-on-root-install.png). Also, I ran a new install under KVM using "set -x" at the top of lilo-installer's postint, as you requested. The log is attached (and gziped) and it's named syslog.kvm.gz. For your reference, the red screen which appears when the error happens is the one being displayed at the file attached and named kvm-xfs-on-root-install.png.
