Which will not work because that test only works if you're _already running_ 
an SMP kernel and the installer doesn't. Looking in sysfs seems to be a 
much more solid solution.

See the link in "After using the Debian-Installer, please send us an 
installation report, even if there weren't any problems." on the D-I 
homepage (the same one with the outdated news ;-)
