I did confirm that the ahci kernel was loaded, as I state above. As for
which driver it needs, I believe that it is the ata_piix driver. See the
2.6.18 kernel changelog which contains this:

Take into account the fact that ICH8 changed the register layout of
the MAP and PCS register bits.
