As reported on debian-laptop the modprobe.d method worked for me after
an upgrade that provided a new kernel 2.6.16. I found out the in the
source package of the kernel 2.6.16 libata is built with atapi support
disable by default. Some one suggested to modify libata.h to enable it
and build a new initrd.
