Bug#363331: installation-reports
Further to my original report, I believe I have identified some
other configuration errors which were left by the installer
which were ralatively benign so did not notice them initially.
I'm not sure if this should be a new report or an addendum, but
as it refers to the same install it would seem that a new
report would have to repeat all of my earlier observations anyway.
Please let me know if this is not the correct procedure.
The issues are as follows:
1. Mysterious '/etc/modules' content
The installation left the following content in the /etc/modules file:
# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file contains the names of kernel modules that should be loaded
# at boot time, one per line. Lines beginning with "#" are ignored.
ide-cd.load
ide-disk.load
ide-generic.load
psmouse.load
sbp2.load
I have been unable to find any explanation for these entries with a '.load'
suffix, which produce the following unsettling diagnostics during boot:
2.
Fri Apr 28 22:10:52 2006: Loading modules...
Fri Apr 28 22:10:52 2006: ide-cd.load
Fri Apr 28 22:10:52 2006: FATAL: Module ide_cd.load not found.

2. Hardware detection seems to find a 'hw_random' device which either
doesn't exist or the driver doesn't recognise:
Fri Apr 28 22:10:53 2006: Detecting hardware...Discovered hardware for these modules: hw_random yenta_socket ohci1394 8139too ipw2200 piix ata_piix snd_hda_intel usb_uhci ehci_hcd

Fri Apr 28 22:10:53 2006: FATAL: Error inserting hw_random (/lib/modules/2.6.15-1-686/kernel/drivers/char/hw_random.ko): No such device
3. Hardware detect attempts to load modules that are already loaded, producing
the following warnings:
Fri Apr 28 22:10:54 2006: ^[[33m*^[[39;49m Skipping already loaded module yenta_socket.
Fri Apr 28 22:10:54 2006: ^[[33m*^[[39;49m Skipping already loaded module ohci1394.

Fri Apr 28 22:10:54 2006: ^[[33m*^[[39;49m Skipping already loaded module ipw2200.
Fri Apr 28 22:10:54 2006: ^[[33m*^[[39;49m Skipping already loaded module piix.
Fri Apr 28 22:10:54 2006: ^[[33m*^[[39;49m Skipping already loaded module ata_piix.
Fri Apr 28 22:10:54 2006: ^[[33m*^[[39;49m Skipping already loaded module snd_hda_intel.
Fri Apr 28 22:10:54 2006: ^[[33m*^[[39;49m Skipping already loaded module uhci_hcd.
Fri Apr 28 22:10:54 2006: ^[[33m*^[[39;49m Skipping already loaded module ehci_hcd.
Not sure if this is normal behaviour, but it looks disturbing when keeping
an eye on boot messages looking for problems..
