Bug#319486: Installation on Sony Vaio VGN-A417M

Package: installation-reports

Debian-installer-version: Netinst daily (2005-07-13) from http://cdimage.debian.org/pub/cdimage-testing/daily/i386/20050713/debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso

I'm using the daily because I couldn't find anything stabler which
succeeded in driving my HD.

uname -a: Linux hpcxport3 2.6.11-1-386 #1 Mon Jun 20 20:53:17 MDT 2005 i686 unknown
Date: 2005-7-22
Method: netinst CD, with network install available.

Machine: Sony Vaio VGN-A417M
Processor: Intel Pentium M 1.86GHz
Memory: 521Mb
Root Device: 80Gb SATA (HTS541080G9SA00) on ICH6 chipset
Root Size/partition table:
250Mb / reiserfs
2Gb sw
78Gb lvm containing /usr, /var, /home

Output of lspci and lspci -n:

The netinst CD doesn't include lspci (it probably should). This is
taken with Gnoppix 1.0 (kernel 2.6.7):

Comments/Problems:

This is the only boot disk I've found which has managed to pick up my
HD, so that's a good start. I had to make a minor fix to the iso -
isolinux.cfg had lots of pointers to kernels named 'linux', when it
meant 'vmlinuz'.

The mounting, partitioning and base install went smoothly (although I
was slightly confused by the skull-and-cross-bones symbol in the
partition table). It all falls apart at the reboot.

The kernel boots, but init fails. It says:

pivot_root: No such file or directory
  /sbin/init: 432: cannot open dev/console
Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!
