Re: debian sarge (debian-installer system) dvdrom and floppy issues

Hi FJP,

Thank you for your quick response. Sorry I did not include a Debian
Installation Report, I was unaware that such a template exists. I only
found this mailing list via someone else..

(Perhaps this mailing list and the template could be added nore
moticably on a part of the debian.org site. This is my first debian install
so I'm still finding stuff out)

My 3 1/2 inch floppy drive green access LED is permanently on. My
drive works fine when I reboot into win2k. I noticed that /dev/fd0 is
missing. Should I just figure out a way to create it using MAKEDEV. Or
perhaps this problem in the sarge install is already known..?

I've not seen this problem before.
Did you install the desktop task or Gnome? In that case this possibly is an udev issue.
If not, please file a proper installation report [1].

I have udevd proces running, I just have the debian sarge defaults

My CD/DVD-Writer was not identified by debian-installer. So I manually
set it up, to use hda as a pseduo scsi device, by apending hda=ide-scsi
to the grub boot command line for the kernel.

What do you mean by "not recognized"? Not recognized to install from or not set up to burn DVD's to?

The latter.. I had hoped it would be able to write cd-r's and dvd-r's
after the install.

Anyway, AFAIK the ide-scsi driver is deprecated. If the CD is not recognized to install from my guess is that you have SATA and the SATA driver is blocking access to the DVD-drive. That is a known problem.
Here also, please file a proper installation-report.

Ok, sorry not to include that info in my first post. I did not know
ide-scsi is deprecated, all my google searches uncovered suggestions to
use ide-scsi. Could you direct me to some info which tells me a better
way to set up my IDE NEC CD/DVD writer please..?

My CD/DVD-Writer is now available as /dev/scd0. I can find it using
cdrecord -scanbus sometimes as 2,0,0.

When I created an ISO and burned the file to disc it all went ok until:

The rest are not installer issues; please ask for help on the user lists.

Ok, I will contact those maintainers.

Thank you for taking the time to reply and help me.

(please include my email address in any replies, i am not on this list)

Kind regards
JG

Comments/Problems:

/dev/fd0 missing, and cd/dvd writing not setup. CD/DVD writer is:
_NEC ' 'DVD_RW ND-2500A ' '1.06'.
This is an IDE model, which is on /dev/hda, I had to convert it to work as /dev/scd0 to write cds.
