Bug#299802: failed detecting promise card with 2.4 install on dual xeon

Today I decided to try the nightly build of sarge netinst,
2005-03-16, on the same machine but with the 2.6 kernel.

Comments/Problems:

The newly installed 2.6 kernel failed to find a disk attached to the
promise card, /dev/hde. Same as for 2.4.

Additional problems: the first reboot process took about
45 minutes... and the 2GHz Xeon felt as quick as an early 386!
Very annoying.

For instance, I get about 60-200 kB/s in network traffic, but since there
are onboard Intel GBit network cards, this is not good.

After installing the 2.6.8-2-686-smp kernel and rebooting, the problem
of slowness persisted. The boot proceeds with normal speed until
slightly after complaining about the partition /dev/hde1 not being
available. Then the slow speed starts at about "Detecting
hardware". Could this be related to hotplug? (ich2rom is the first
device sought for I think).
