[MANUAL] Re: Bug#281461: installation-reports - PPPoE Problem

The user below suggest a minor change to the manual. However what he
describes is that pppoeconf fails when an existing eth0 interface is
not up. I tend to think this is a pppoeconf bug, do you agree?

Hi Christian

Perhaps I ticked the wrong box.

The second half of the install, which runs after the first reboot, was NOT
successful because no connection to the Internet could be established, and then
none of the APT stuff could run, because no connection could be made to a Debian
mirror.

The installation manual says, if you have PPPOE, you need to switch to VT2 and
run pppoeconf. That's when I get the message about no concentrator being found.

Last night I successfully got through this by typing:

    ifconfig eth0 up

before running pppoeconf.

If this is generally required to do a successful installation over PPPOE could
it please be included in the installation manual for us inexperienced Linux
users.

Thanks
Jeremy

Given that this install report is a complete success report, I do as
usual with successful install report

 : I close the bug..:-)

This does not of course mean you weren't right to report. Knowing the
installations are correct is important for the d-i team.

Many thanks for yourtime testing the Debian Installer and reporting
your results. Have fun with your new Debian system!

PS : the pppoeconf problem is outside Debian Installer scope. I suggest
you report it separately against the pppoeconf package with as much
details as possible.
