I did not even faced the said grumpyness ...

But somebody needs to do the work and I admit my slot of spare time for
Blends is currently fully occupied.  I have quite some backlog for the
web sentinel on my todo list and would like to encourage other people to
step in to do the needed work.

Same for me - I never have created a live medium - I just know that
these helper tools do exist and that it should be not to complicated to
create such an image.

My idea was rather that we (= the according Blends team) would create
such a life medium by using these control files independently from the
general release process and put these to some convinient place.  I
perfectly agree that the target audience should not do this.
