Re: Problems installing HP Media Vault 2120
Thanks for the suggestions Martin. I did get it to work eventually but I
havd to move it home to a different network. The original attempts
were made at my university where we have some restrictions on getting
DHCP addresses immediately so I suspected that my original problem had
something to do with this even though I set up a private network with
my own DHCP server. Once I took it home there were another set of
problemswhich had to be overcome but the system is now happily running.
Let me list the steps below in case anyone else have the same problem. I
am not sure why this happened but I suspect that there might be an
imcompatibility with my router and the Media Vault recovery mode. I have
a Linksys WRT54G at home.

No, you don't have to do anything like that. It should load just
fine... unfortunately, I've no idea why it doesn't work in your case.
You could try removing the disk while you boot but giving that you
reach state 5 (i.e. it's blinking slowly) I don't think that would
help.
The problem I was facing is that even though the Linksys has a DHCP server
and it recognized and assigned a number to the Media Vault during recovery
mode, the Media Vault would always come up with its default address
169.254.100.100. I am not sure why because if I allowed the Media Vault
to boot to it's native system the IP address was assigned properly.
I had a Debian machine on the wired network and used this as the boot
loader host for the Media Vault.
1. Set up the wired interface on the boot loader host to have a second IP
address of 169.254.100.1 with gateway being the same. The stanza in
/etc/network/interfaces is:
iface eth0:1 inet static
address 169.254.100.1
gateway 169.254.100.1
netmask 255.255.255.0
2. Activate eth0:1 using ifup.
3. Boot HP Media Vault to recovery mode
4. Run uphpmvault
5. When the Media Vault reboots, it comes back and gets an IP address from
the Linksys DHCP server and it is then possible to ssh in and start the
installer.
