Contents of resolv.conf are:
nameserver 192.168.1.1

...which is the IP of my ADSL router and the same setting as on my
laptop that resolves the address just fine.

Any suggestions what I should do?  What about setting up
ftp.uk.debian.org manually in the hosts file?
