Try 'modprobe nvidia' to see if you can load the kernel module.  Might
be worth appending 'nvidia' to /etc/modules to make sure it is always
loaded at boot.

If you can't load the module then it probably isn't compiled for the
current kernel yet.  To fix that do:

m-a -t prepare
m-a -t a-i nvidia
modprobe nvidia
