An upgrade to 2.6.15 kernel appears to have solved the problem. I decided to
try the stock (etch) upgrade before resorting to any initrd tricks. Module
ide_scsi is _not_ loaded, and the drives are appearing as hd*, as they did
with 2.6.8. The odd misbehaviour has also stopped, see:
