Do also check ASRock when looking for a Athlon boards w/ socket 754.
Works well with the amd64 port.

What's ASRock?

I found that Asrock is a low-cost brand of Asus. A review of the Asrock K8S8X board can be found at http://www.ocworkbench.com/2004/asrock/k8s8x/k8s8x-1.htm. After a few weeks having the system up and running without any major issues I would say this is an extremely reasonably priced motherboard and an absolute recommendation to start with AMD64 technology.

Best
