I think my problem is solved, i upgraded the dac960 firmware to the latest release (2.70) from HP. now install-debian is in progress, i'll let you know how it ends.

1. RTFM linux/Documentation/README.DAC960 . Check that your card and
firmware version are supported. If you don't have linux sources anywhere,
http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/README.DAC960 seems to have copy,
which may or may not be the latest version.

2. Read the output of dmesg. I'm guessing it is complaining about an
unsupported firmware version. That's just a guess, since you didn't
provide much information. (Checking that the module was loaded is a good
step in the right direction, but you should check other basic things too.)
