I think I had the same problem. I didn't know initrd needed libc but I
thought two core things with a size problem at the same time was too
much of a coincidence. It was nice to see apt-get say after it had
finished there would be disk space *freed*.

I upgraded libc, purge the kernel image then installed it again.
