Unfortunately, I don't think one can get the actual video RAM size from
looking at the "lspci" output, though that *would* be nice...

I, too, have had the same experience with a Permedia-2 based card (it
has 4MB but the drivers "detect" 8MB :-), and the symptoms are
identical.  And it doesn't appear to matter what platform it's in, the
driver always makes the mistake.

All the Millennium II's that I've seen have 4MB (4 chips) on the card
itself, and need the additional plugin "daughtercard" that holds more
memory (4MB, 8MB, and 12MB are the options, IIRC). So if you do NOT
have a daughtercard, you may only have the original 4MB...
