I agree and somewhat disagree.  In the end, all non-portable code should
be fixed, ideally by upstream authors.  The reality of the situation,
though, is that most of them don't care about Alphas, so it would be nice
as a failsafe to have such a feature (DEC's compiler does, fyi).
