Just to be clear, I did not propose this as a permanent solution.  I
am only using that because at the moment, a better solution has not
presented itself.  I am concerned about the effects on g++ and the
replacement of various libraries with older versions if I go down to
the older version of egcs.  So far, I haven't seen any good solution
to this.

Also, a PowerPC person informs me that there are much more recent
versions of egcs than we have here and that we ought to investigate
them.  Hmm.

Yes, me too.  However, until we have that, I'm using -O.  It at least
seems to generate valid code :-)
