chown -h trouble??

`chown -h' is only supported when the kernel supports it. You must
get a new kernel that supports it, say, 2.0.35 from someone with the same
machine you have.

If you installed a dpkg from unstable then dpkg is broken until you have
done this. (Well, the story is longer than that but you probably don't
want it ...). This is a known problem that is being dealt with and will be
fixed before "unstable" becomes "stable", of course. The way to repair it
has been posted several times to this list so take a peek in the archives
if you want it.

Cheers,
