I tend to use 38400 because that's the default for this serial driver and 
because 9600 is very slow.

The default applies when you pass only "console=ttyS0". I like to use 
"console=tty0 console=ttyS0" so that kernel messages are logged to the 
framebuffer console as well as the serial port.
