Sorry, as a newbie to debian I assumed that aptitude/dselect would show
me that binutils was available and installable. When scrolling through,
and selecting binutils-dev, I was informed that it was unavailalbe.

gcc 3.3 it is then. Though libgcc2 that is installed says gcc 3.4.3

apt-cdrom is a new command, I'll look at it.
have the complete 16 cd set and installed from it.
