well, 2.2.16 works quite fine for me:

axelm@most:~$ uname -a
Linux most 2.2.16 #2 Sat Aug 5 13:33:17 CEST 2000 m68k unknown
axelm@most:~$ uptime
  4:49pm  up 55 days, 20:19,  1 user,  load average: 0.10, 0.05, 0.01  

That's 2.2.16 without buserror patch applied, running on a full 68040 upgraded Performa 475. Source pulled from CVS around Aug 4th.

The only strange thing that i see is a (interrupt?) lockup after heavy cpu *and* io load (e.g. compiling kernels...).
