As I said in my original mail, going via Zagreb was not significantly cheaper.
I just gave more details on this in my reply to Tiago. I did not investigate
via Sarajevo, but I did look into Ljubljana and that was actually pricier and
slower than the other options. I think most of the advice on the mailing list
and wiki about which airports and airlines to use has focused on Europeans with
access to the regional budget airlines like Ryanair and EasyJet. Those kinds of
airlines don't generally offer transatlantic flights, especially not in a way
that would be useful to go to a relatively uncommon transatlantic destination
like Southeastern Europe.
If I find a good option for US travelers I will be sure to document it on the
wiki and mention it on this mailing list, but I'm still working on finding one,
as you can see by my emails.
