This isn't about growisofs but readcd -c2scan.
This is even mentioned in the subject.

The problem is limited to ide-scsi which isn't even loaded here.

readcd -c2scan works properly on the other drive on the cable,
so block size is not it.

Must be some difference in the replies or command interpretation or
transfer between NEC and Plextor.

Works with either drive and works in DMA mode.
No PIO (system time) load here.
