I've been thinking this myself, but where it falls flat is that it
requires to write the image to disk, instead of piping it straight to
the burner.

One could try this though:

mkfifo /tmp/pipe
md5sum </tmp/fifo&
mkisofs ... | tee -a /tmp/pipe | cdrecord
