From someone who does not use any WordPress/blogging infrastructure, why
BuddyPress and not a *real* social network, better if distributed and
F/LOSS-friendly, i.e. <http://joindiaspora.org/>?

As far as I understand it, BuddyPress requires each user to have a
WordPress ID, while (again as far as I understand it) Diapora integrates
user-served instances (so each user can have fully control to her/his
data).
