Thanks for the suggestion. I gave the 2.4.22 kernel another
try. Here's what I did and results:

1. Installed the 2.4.22-1-k7 stock Debian kernel and kernel-headers.

2. Recompiled and installed nvidia kernel module (version 4496).

3. reboot. 2.4.22-1-k7 is now the running kernel, and X is up and
running with no problem. (Login via gdm.)

4. recompile and install nvidia nForce2 drivers modules (version 0261)
using nVidia's instructions. (The only trick to this is "ln -s
/usr/src/kernel-headers-2.4.22-1-k7 /usr/src/linux-2.4.22" before
trying to compile the nforce modules.)

5. modprobe nvaudio...now I have sound working.

6. modprobe nvnet. /etc/init.d/networking stop. /etc/init.d/networking
start. Now I have internet connection working.

7. Plugged in usb webcam and check /var/log/message to see if devices
were created (I have devfs mounted on /dev). They were. Start
camstream and enjoyed looking at myself for a minute or so. Exit
camstream and disconnect webcam. Things look good so far.

8. Plugged in my clie and started jpilot to see if I can
hotsync. devfsd reports devices were created, but jpilot was unable to
bind to them. Exit jpilot; disconnect clie to try again. "ps aux |grep
jpilot" reports jpilot is still running in the background. I was
unable to kill jpilot process which means USB subsystem has failed and
I need to reboot. Try to exit from my X-session and crash...everything
has locked up, and I need to power off before rebooting.

9. reboot. Try to log into X-session. Another crash.

10 reboot using 2.4.20 kernel and check logs to see what is
reported. The problem with jpilot/usb generated a kernel oops. The
crashes did not generate any log messages, which is similar to 5 or 6
crashes I've had over last few weeks.

Maybe the configuration of the stock kernel is the problem. I'll have
to try to compile with something closer to your the configuration this
coming weekend when I have more time.
