You don't need to clean/recompile/reinstall the kernel, just to get
alsa-modules. (You may want to do so, to keep from compiling the OSS
modules, but it isn't required.)

If you're using make-kpkg you need to get rid of
/usr/src/linux/debian/changelog; most people just do "make-kpkg clean".

If you aren't using make-kpkg that file doesn't get written.
