  Bingo! I was using javaplugin.so. javaplugin_oji provides both
  (all). Thanks.

  Scott, after you install the j2sdk1.3 .deb as previously mentioned,
  do this:

    # ln -s /etc/alternatives/javaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/
