The checks are rather too complex to do on commit, however, the checks _are_ done daily and the results published on [1], so it is pretty easy for translators to check for errors in variables and a few other types of errors e.g. the day after they commit a translation update. Of course, this does not catch mistranslated strings or strings that were unfuzzied too hastily without sufficient checking if the translation really matches the original string. Remember that no string is marked fuzzy unless at least something has changed in the original string.
