Which version of Debian are you running? It might be that the mangle that I provided works for Wheezy. I don't understand what you mean. pristine-tar makes sure you can restore the original tar (with equal checksum) without additional needs. You already have an upstream branch in your git repo, adding the pristine-tar is than hardly any effort, with gain for your sponsors or possible coworkers, that don't need to download the original tar.
