Re: the idea of a Gopher Wayback machine

We don't have a right to be forgotten nor should we. We are only forgotten as a product of time. But, one can peruse historical public records of long dead people and learn about them.

Beethoven's been dead since the 1820s. If one were interested, one could learn about his complete life history and even read private letters he wrote - stuff considered private among civilized men - yet there it is. If old Ludwig were alive today I'm sure he would have alot to say about it.

A gopher wayback machine is overdue. Unfortunately, the heyday of university systems are in the past.

a little way back (see what I did there?) I brought up the idea of a Gopher Wayback machine to Bitreich's 20h in the hopes of bullying him into action and it didn't go as expected. I wasn't thinking he'd do it, he's busy and I wasn't asking nicely.

what surprised me is he thought the idea was wrong and dumb. he didn't like the idea of recording Gopher history in that way and talked about a right to be forgotten.

I'm on the opposite side of the fence, I feel like history is more important than that right, and if you publish something publicly then you do so knowing that you absolve yourself of that right.

so I ask the list, what are your thoughts on the idea of a Gopher Wayback machine?
