Re: the idea of a Gopher Wayback machine

I like the sound of that!

I assume we'd need a gopher crawler script, and would that rely on a central list of gopherholes? Would it collect just the actual gopher resource line, or the underlying file it referenced?

It's definitely needed though - I feel I have a lot of "stuff" that's been rescued and was hard to find in the first place.

a little way back (see what I did there?) I brought up the idea of a Gopher Wayback machine to Bitreich's 20h in the hopes of bullying him into action and it didn't go as expected. I wasn't thinking he'd do it, he's busy and I wasn't asking nicely.

what surprised me is he thought the idea was wrong and dumb. he didn't like the idea of recording Gopher history in that way and talked about a right to be forgotten.

I'm on the opposite side of the fence, I feel like history is more important than that right, and if you publish something publicly then you do so knowing that you absolve yourself of that right.

so I ask the list, what are your thoughts on the idea of a Gopher Wayback machine?
