indeed. 'ls -l /etc/resolv.conf' returned

-rw------- 1 root root 49 Dec 10 05:15 /etc/resolv.conf

'chmod 644 /etc/resolv.conf' solves the problem. the time stamp
suggests this file is automagically generated or modified. i wonder
whether the permissions would also be reset to 600?

please consider my problem solved (at least i now know what to look
out for). thanks very much for your help and patience,

h.
