When I tried to run glxgears, I received a black screen with i-beam cursor.
I was able to switch vt's and kill glxgears, which restored the view to
vt7.
While the screen is black, are screenshots you take black as well?
Only the window used by glxgears and the system tray icon for hplip is black. All of the rest of the screen is visible.

Okay, so what I think happens is that the video card's gamma ramp gets
set to all black somehow. This could be a bug in the window manager, the
X driver or the X server. Do you have the possibility of trying older
version of any of these?

Short of getting them from snapshot.debian.net (which appears unreachable at this time), I can try:

xserver-xorg 1:7.3+19

xserver-xorg-video-radeon 1:6.9.0-1+lenny4

kwin 4:3.5.9.dfsg.1-6

BTW, can you provide the glxinfo output I asked for?

It was sent in an earlier message and reached http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=537732 alright.

Regards,

Arthur.
