Mr. Lefevre:

I get basically this functionality, plus a lot of other useful features, by
using GNU Screen, available in the Debian package "screen".

Except for a vastly annoying problem having to do with the failure of
screen and xterm to cooperate regarding what the primary selection is, I
highly recommend it.
