I wanted to use the us,us_intl and fr layouts and be able to switch 
between them (using setxkbmap or the gnome applet). It seems some 
combinations are impossible. 

$ setxkbmap -layout "us"
$ setxkbmap -layout "us_intl"
$ setxkbmap -layout "us,fr"
$ setxkbmap -layout "us,us_intl"
Error loading new keyboard description
$ setxkbmap -layout "us,ca_enhanced"
Error loading new keyboard description
