Hi Branden,

Thanks for responding.

dpkg will "preserve" a removed file? I had not made any local
modifications to that file.

All the alias files have the same date and time (except for the new
version I copied from the extracted xfonts-base package):

moseley@bumby:/etc/X11/fonts/misc$ ls -l *.alias
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1322 2003-11-07 11:32 xfonts-artwiz.alias
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5737 2004-03-10 07:15 xfonts-base.alias
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 533 2003-11-07 11:32 xfonts-base-transcoded.alias
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 5272 2003-11-07 11:32 xfonts-bolkhov-cp1251-misc.alias
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 8422 2003-11-07 11:32 xfonts-terminus.alias
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1363 2003-11-07 11:32 xtel.alias

I'm now just wondering how xfonts-base.alias ended up with iso8859-15
instead of 8859-1. I'm also not sure that the update yesterday is what
broke things, as I may have had the server running continuously for
more than one sid update -- perhaps a month (or longer).

Was there a time where xfonts-base.alias had 8859-15 in it? Doesn't
seem likely.

moseley@bumby:/etc/X11/fonts/misc$ head !$ head xfonts-base.alias.old

6x13bold -misc-fixed-bold-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso8859-15

At this point things are working and I'm just curious what happened.
