Bug#163935: xdm does not start / crashes
I can confirm that this bug happens on 8bit displays. I have just had
it on an hppa system with the current xdm from unstable (4.2.1-8).
Machine information:
HP 712/80 PA/RISC workstation
8bit onboard STI framebuffer with XFree using the framebuffer driver
PS/2 mouse
X works when started via "startx", so the problem is not in the Xserver.
After reading bug #163935 I have set up an unstable chroot on an i386 box
which shows the same behaviour when the color depth is set to 8bit. When
setting it to 16bit, I get a login prompt, although the keyboard is dead
afterwards. This might have something to do with my chroot setup. I
currently have no possibility to test a native unstable installation on
i386. The graphics hardware on the PA/RISC system is only capable of 8 bits,
so I cannot test a higher colordepth there.
After applying the patch to /etc/X11/xdm/Xresources mentionend
in bug #163935 to get a monochrome Debian logo for xdm, xdm starts up.
This bug did not occur with a woody installation which was running on
the same hardware before, so this problem seems to have been introduced
with XFree 4.2.
Regards,
Karsten
